Red Diesel (Gas oil)

Keep your off-road vehicles and equipment moving with a guaranteed supply of red diesel from WCF Chandlers

Red diesel is widely used to operate registered off-road vehicles, machinery, and commercial boilers; however, The Government's recent changes on the tax relief of gas oil means many industry sectors are no longer eligible to use gas oil/red diesel.

As your local commercial and agricultural fuel supplier, we’ve put together a list of FAQs to help you better understand the dos and don’ts of red diesel.

Gas Oil FAQs

What is red diesel?

“Red diesel” is the most common name used for gas oil. To prevent its misuse in road vehicles, it is a legal requirement for red diesel to be marked with a red dye as well as chemical markers. Red diesel is essentially the same as white diesel (DERV) however you are unable to use it in road vehicles and other prohibited vehicles and uses.

Some of the more common names you might hear red diesel referred as include tractor diesel, 35-second oil, agricultural diesel, cherry red, rebated diesel, and generator diesel.

What industries can use rebated red diesel?

The types of special vehicles that may use rebated red diesel are:

  • Travelling fairs and circuses
  • Fuel used for non-commercial purposes – electricity generation and heating
  • Agriculture, horticulture, fish farming, and forestry
  • Rail transport
  • Community amateur sports clubs and golf courses
  • Sailing, boating, and marine transport

It is worth noting that any machine or appliance should only contain rebated fuel if it’s being used, or was last used, for one of these purposes. A machine or appliance found with rebated diesel in it, that it should not contain, is liable to seizure and financial sanction.

What vehicles can use red diesel?

As of the 1st of April 2022, the following categories can use red diesel:
  • Vehicles designed to operate on a railway
  • Agricultural vehicles
  • Special vehicles

But only when they’re being used for qualifying purposes, for example:

  • For agriculture, horticulture, aquatic farming, or forestry
  • On land maintained by a community amateur sports club (CASC)On a golf course or driving range
  • On land occupied by a travelling fair or travelling circus

We recommend that you check The Government website for specific details on the acceptable uses of each type of vehicle, before purchasing red diesel to ensure you are operating within the confinements of the law.

How to report the misuse of red diesel?

Diesel (also known as gas oil or DERV) is normally liable to the full rate of excise duty. There are circumstances where a particular vehicle or machine may be able to use fuel on which a reduced (rebated) rate of excise duty has been charged (red diesel), because of the type of vehicle or machine, and the purpose it’s being used for. If you suspect that someone is illegally using red diesel, you can report them to HMRC’s fraud hotline

What is the tax on red diesel?

The VAT (value-added tax) charged on red diesel is 5% up to 2,300 litres. This increases to the standard rate of 20% VAT above 2,300 litres; however, you may be able to claim 15% back if you are eligible for fuel duty relief. For more details on fuel duty relief, we advise you to review the government's website.

Can red diesel be used as heating oil?

Red diesel may be used for non-commercial premises, such as a home for heating or generating electricity. If you are a commercial business that was using red diesel before 1st April 2022, you are no longer able to use red diesel in commercial boilers, dryers, heaters, or generators. We would recommend switching to industrial heating oil which is a drop-in alternative with an array of added-value benefits
